Medical Transcription In a Nutshell

By TaSha Franklin

A Medical Transcriptionist, also known as an MT, is an allied health professional responsible for typing or transcribing medical records dictated by a doctor, either written or verbal, into a legible format that can then be filed into a patient's medical records.  Years ago the MT profession consisted of translating and consolidating piles of handwritten notes, or cassette tapes,  into a single patient file physically stored within a filing cabinet along with thousands of others. Whereas a typewriter may have been used in the past, now the computer and internet  have become the popular way of transmitting these documents. Digital recorders and computers have taken the place of hand held recorders. In the past dictations where primarily placed on cassette tapes, whereas now they can be downloaded onto computers as FTP files, or WAV files.  Many Transcriptionist receive these dictations over the internet and also return the transcribed documents via the internet as well, therefore never having to leave the comfort of their home. For this reason, the MT profession has become very popular for those looking to work from home.

The U.S Department of Labor statistics 2010-11 Edition shows:

"Employment of medical transcriptionists is projected to grow about as fast as the average; job opportunities should be good, especially for those who are certified."

Wage-and-salary medical transcriptionists had median hourly wages of $15.41 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $13.02 and $18.55. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $10.76, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $21.81. Median hourly wages in the industries employing the largest numbers of medical transcriptionists were as follows:

Medical and diagnostic laboratories

General medical and surgical hospitals

Outpatient care centers

Offices of physicians

Business support services

Becoming a Medical Transcriptionist does require some education. Either the completion of a two year associate's degree or a one year certificate program seems to be the standard. You can obtain training either through College Study, or a Home Study Course. College Study is more expensive, and a Home Study Course may be cheaper, but keep in mind,  you must be very well disciplined in order to complete it. You must also be very careful when choosing an online medical transcription course. Be aware of unrealistic claims about their programs. This is a big investment, so read reviews and do your homework. Depending on which course of study you choose, you can expect to spend 8 months to 2 years in training. Additional skills such as grammar and the English language, medical terminology and physiology, some anatomy and typing are also required. On average MT's are expected to type at a speed of 70wpm at the least. The faster that you can type, the more profit you can earn. If you're curious how fast you can type, simply type "Free typing test" into your search engine and pick from several.

In conclusion, becoming a Medical Transcriptionist is a career choice. Make sure you understand all that it involves before making your decision.
