Freelance Writing In A Nutshell

By TaSha Franklin

If Freelance Writing is what interests you, you must be prepared for the competition. This is not an easy profession, especially if you're just starting out. Now I'm not trying to derail you from your passion, but I do want you to understand that it takes time to build a reputation. There are plenty of opportunities available, either as a magazine writer, copywriter, or in editing. There's also a ton of website owners who need original content writers.

Build a Portfolio
So, first things first, build a portfolio or a "clip" of examples. Not too many, but enough to display your writing skills. You don't want to give away free original written content. Whether you have to scrounge up a paper from college, or volunteer for a writing project, make sure it's perfect! Another excellent way to showcase your work is by creating a blog, or website. When applying for projects or jobs, you can provide a link to your portfolio.

Join a Forum
What better way to learn, than from those who are already doing it. These forums can be priceless, especially when you're looking for the perfect employer. Subscribe to  a freelance writing newsletter or join a writing group.  Many newsletters provide job opportunities, as well as tools and tips to get you started. Get out there and start asking questions.

Create a Pricing Schedule
This can be the hardest part, especially when you're just starting out. If possible, find out what other freelance writers with similar experience are charging. Honesty is the best policy, so don't fake interest or pretend to be an employer out to hire in order to get this information. Just simply explain your situation. You'll find many writers are more than willing to help a fellow freelancer. Also, keep in mind that the lowest price usually gets the bid, however, don't sell yourself short. As you build your reputation, your prices will grow as well.

Beware of Scams
You must, just like any other online profession, watch out for the scams. Anytime you see an advertisement claiming to pay oodles of money to someone with little or no experience, it's a RED FLAG!

Apply, Apply, Apply
Last but certainly not least, post your resume/portfolio/clip with several online job listing websites. The more the better. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

In conclusion, freelance writing is not a path I would suggest to someone just looking to make some extra cash. It's a passion, and you have to be dedicated, and truly love it to be successful at it.

"You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore."
